win tickets for Az-tech on Friday with MAELSTROM!

3 IS THE MAJIK NUMBER…………

Yes folks, March 12th celebrates the end of Az-Tech’s third full year tearing up The Caves in Edinburgh, and what a thoroughly banging time it’s been. Since March 2007, Az-Tech has tried to push the envelope of Edinburgh clubbing to embrace a whole new dimension of late-night debauchery, bringing you the finest in DJ talent from the length and breadth of Britain and beyond, and boasting one of the best, most up-for-it and most faithful crowds in the city.

Looking back over three legendary years’ worth of artists, it was hard to pick a favourite that would bring all the perfect ingredients for this party. After much debating and happy memoirs, one special set from October 2008 stood out beyond the rest… French master of his craft and Noise Porn favourite Maelstrom’s last set at the Caves was a mind-blowing journey through more styles than you could shake a dusty vinyl at, definitely one of the freshest and most forward-thinking sets we’d heard in a long long while… Performing live, he whipped through an astounding back-catalogue of breaks, beats & bumps, flipping tunes on their heads and barely stopping to catch a breath- those still standing at the end went off the hook…

The past two years have seen Maelstrom launch his own label in his homeland, and bash out a monstrous amount of extra-high-grade tuneage. He’s taken in a tour of the southern hemisphere and is one of the busiest of the continent’s dance artists. Never one to rest on his laurels, Maelstrom has also fashioned an alternative identity for himself, playing and producing up-tempo funk worldwide under the alias of “Misterstrom”… for a sneak peak at both sides of the alter ego, check the two brand-spanking new mixes below.

Fuse Presents Lee Mortimer

This Friday 5th March Edinburgh’s fastest growing electro night Fuse will be offering yet another Bass Heavy treat in the form of Lee Mortimer.  As one of the hottest up and coming stars in his field, Lee is making waves with big sleazy jump – up productions and massive collaborations with the likes of Laidback Luke and Foamo.

Some call it fidget house, a label which accurately describes this heavy sound but as Lee is keen to point out ‘anything sleazy, electronic and above all else, BIG(!) will make it into my sets!’ These sets are getting bigger too with jaunts around the world playing clubs as far a field as Singapore (Club Zirca) and Australia (HQ/Revolver) where he will soon be an underground superstar. He also played most of the UK festivals last year with a storming turn at Bestival which had the crowd going mental in the middle of the day!

As well as his sterling efforts on the wheels of steel he has also made a name for himself as a producer par excellence with tracks signed to Fool’s Gold, Dubsided, CR2 and Made to Play. He’s also provided remixes for bands such as Franz Ferdinand, The Futureheads and Bombay Bicycle Club to name but a few. He has also re-jigged tunes by Foamo, DJ Zinc, Dave Spoon & Pete Tong to spine tingling effect. Many of these mixes have also appeared on compilations by Claude Von Stroke, Plump DJs and Kissy Sell Out. It seems Lee has a knack for lifting already banging tunes up a notch into the upper echelons of dance floor hedonism!

Lee Mortimer is the complete package. He remixes; produces and his DJ skills are unbeatable. He regularly plays Mint in Leeds and London’s Egg and his monster sets are something to behold. It all falls into place when watching him play out as the crowd throbs in unison as each new bassline warps into another. Basically Lee just loves music and you can hear this love in everything he touches from full on party tunes (It’s Going Down) to 80’s electro revamps (check out the awesome remix of Visage – Fade To Grey). With talent to spare Lee isn’t just one to watch, he is the one to watch.

“Lee’s one of the most exciting producers and DJs in the UK right now. You have to check him play… I don’t think anyone can touch him for that sound at the moment.” -
Dave ‘Switch’ Taylor

Check out the Facebook Event as well as the video of when Doorly played at Fuse.

Sam Hell @ Az-Tech

Got a brand new mix here for you from a phenomenal talent in breaks that is gracing our Scottish shores next weekend for a mammoth party at Edinburgh’s Caves. Having taken a three-month Christmas holiday (yes, we’ve milked it somewhat), Az-Tech is back and proud to present Sam Hell, who’s been picked up by the likes of Annie Nightingale and Far Too Loud as one of the top names producing breaks at the moment. Saying this, the mysterious Mr. Hell has more than one string to his bow in the way of production. Sam is the man behind the massive new Electro-House sample pack for Zero-G, you can browse and/or purchase at their website.

But for now, get a load of this minimix below, it’s 30 minutes of gargantuan basslines and driving beats, breaks meeting the heavier end of electro-house for the perfect Thursday lunchtime treat! And, if you like what you hear, make sure you make your way down to the Caves next Friday for a belter of a party to see in the new season for Az-Tech!

si begg

If you’re in Edinburgh and know your way around an electronic beat or two, you may want to head down to Sneaky Pete’s tomorrow night to catch Si Begg performing a special three-hour set, presented by Pins and Needles and Stepback. This is a rare opportunity to see a true hero of electronica at one of Edinburgh’s most intimate venues. The ambassador of genre-bending experimental breakbeat goes under so many guises it’s hard to keep track of the man. Check out the video for one of his last releases as S.I. Futures, released in 2001 – you’d never know those slickly-crafted beats are 8 years old!

These days Si is still making great music – with a political slant. As a hearty two-fingers up to the commercial music industry, Si is giving away his latest EP for free, unless you buy the uber-limited edition boxed version… either way he’s bypassing the record labels and putting the music directly into your hands. Read the brief and download the tunes here.

And if you like what you hear, you can hear the lot, plus a whole lot more from Si Begg’s no doubt extensive record box, tomorrow night at Sneaky Pete’s. This promises to be a completely unique evening, a lesson in exquisite beats with something for everyone. Support comes from MNKY and Wolfjazz. Check the Facebook event here.

Jokers of the Scene

Another heads up for any readers here in Edinburgh: As you’ve probably guessed from the flier above, on the 16th October, The Cabaret Voltaire are going to be hosting new night Axis, headlined by none other than Canadian electro duo Jokers Of The Scene! And if you’re not familiar with them, let me give you a little taster in the form of two quality free tracks for you all. First up is their take on Burns – Turbo, with it’s raw, dirty synth-driven basslines, which give way to haunty melodic buildups, only to throw you straight back into the deep end.

Burns – Turbo (Jokers Of The Scene Remix)

Next we’ve got the darker, brooding sounds of their Mika – We Are Golden (Jokers Of The Scene ‘Are Not Who You Think They Are’) remix. It’s got an almost menacing undertone permeating the entire track, sending shivers down my spine!

Mika – We Are Golden (Jokers Of The Scene ‘Are Not Who You Think They Are’ Remix)

And to top it all off, we’ve got the video of their latest track (that tore up the Hype Machine charts when it dropped), Baggy Bottom Boys embedded below for you, followed by the full blurb for their upcoming night at The Cabaret Voltaire (just click on “more..“). We’ll be out in full force, and should all go according to plan, will have a video interview with the Jokers up for you guys after the night. Hope to catch some Noise Porn readers down there!

az-tech @ the caves

Also hitting the Capital next Friday, Az-Tech’s return to the venue that everyone’s talking about… Edinburgh’s best kept secret, The Caves. If you haven’t already been to one of these nights check the video below at about 1.15 – looking sweet!

Next Friday sees the awesome Pangea collective return to steal the show once again – Special Ed headlines with the best fast-paced, uplifting drum & bass, Jekt and Jzy will be unleashing their artistic talents on a massive canvas live on stage, and MC Troubla takes to the mic to noise things up a bit. Az-Tech residents will be spinning some feel-good breaks, house & electro to start the night off. Magic! This video is a snippet of 2008’s head-to-head between these two Scottish heavyweights – make sure you’re there for the rematch.

Check the Facebook event here.

And just for you beat-guzzlers, I’ve thrown together a little promo mix to mark the occasion, a celebration of bass in all its delightful forms!
